Cascara is a word translated from Spanish meaning ‘husk’ or ‘peel;’ it is the skin of the coffee cherry and should not be confused with ‘Cascara Sagrada,’ a natural laxative. In the past, coffee beans were removed from the cherry during processing and many farmers would throw the Cascara into compost.
As of recent, studies have come out proving the many health benefits associated with consuming Coffee Cascara. It is rich in free-radical fighting antioxidants and contains many polyphenols like: proanthocyanidins, ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid, quinic acid and caffeic acid. It has anti-aging benefits and is the only food/drink next to chlorella(a blue algae) that aids in cellular regeneration. Coffee Cascara has proven to have 2x the potassium of a banana and 3x more iron than spinach and contains many anti-inflammatory properties.
